Certified pre-owned vs pre-owned Rolex: what the difference means for buyers

Rolex's own programme for second-hand watches against an ordinary pre-owned purchase: the checks, the guarantee, where each is sold and what it means for you.

By Kay Atkinson, Watch60's watch specialist · 16 min read · Updated October 2026

The difference between Rolex certified pre-owned vs pre-owned comes down to who checks the watch and who stands behind it. A Rolex Certified Pre-Owned watch has been checked by Rolex, is sold by an Official Rolex Retailer and carries a two-year Rolex guarantee. Any other pre-owned Rolex is checked by the seller, if at all, and any warranty is the seller’s own.

Rolex Certified Pre-Owned (often shortened to CPO) is Rolex’s programme for reselling second-hand Rolex watches through its own retail network. An Official Rolex Retailer is a shop Rolex has appointed to sell and service its watches. “Pre-owned” on its own just means the watch has had an owner before.

What is Rolex Certified Pre-Owned?

It is Rolex’s own route for second-hand watches. A pre-owned Rolex goes back through the same checks as a watch in Rolex’s after-sales service, and if it passes it gets a Certified Pre-Owned seal and a two-year international guarantee. The programme began in December 2022 and is sold only through Official Rolex Retailers that have joined it.

Senatus reported the launch in December 2022: the programme started at Bucherer boutiques in six countries, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, France, Denmark and the UK, and other Official Rolex Retailers could join from spring 2023 (Senatus, 2022). The same report says a watch must be at least three years old to be resold as certified.

Watches of Switzerland, one of the UK retailers in the programme, sets out what Rolex says about the checks. Each pre-owned watch “is subject to the same demanding controls as those of the after-sales service for models purchased new”, and the seal “attests to its authenticity and proper functioning” (Watches of Switzerland). Rolex’s own statement on the retailer’s site describes the watches as “fully serviced and guaranteed by us”.

A certified watch comes in a distinctive pouch with the Certified Pre-Owned seal, a two-year international guarantee card, a service booklet and official papers (Watches of Switzerland).

How does a watch get into the CPO programme?

The retailer finds the watch, usually by buying it from a client, and sends it to Rolex. Rolex checks that it is genuine and in its original configuration, puts it through its after-sales controls, and only then issues the seal and guarantee card. The retailer sets the price. Rolex does not buy or sell the second-hand watches itself.

Launch coverage set out the division of work. WatchesbySJX reported in December 2022 that the programme is “open to all and any of the brand’s retailers on a voluntary basis”, that retailers must find their own pre-owned stock, and that they “are free to set prices on their pre-owned offerings” (WatchesbySJX, December 2022). The same report says the three-year minimum age is something Rolex can confirm through its own point-of-sale records.

The steps, as launch reports and retailers describe them:

  1. The retailer acquires the watch. It must be at least three years old (Senatus, 2022; WatchesbySJX, December 2022).
  2. Rolex checks authenticity and originality. Fratello reported that Rolex checks each watch for “authenticity and originality”, and that a watch with genuine Rolex replacement parts fitted by a Rolex service centre can still be certified (Fratello, December 2022).
  3. The watch goes through Rolex’s controls. Each one is “subject to the same demanding controls as those of the after-sales service” (Watches of Switzerland).
  4. Rolex issues the seal and card. The seal “attests to its authenticity and proper functioning”, and the two-year guarantee runs from the date the buyer purchases it (Watches of Switzerland).

One detail differs between reports. WatchesbySJX said retailers can sell the watches only after they have been serviced at an official Rolex service centre, while Fratello wrote that certification “does not mean that Rolex will service each watch” (WatchesbySJX, December 2022; Fratello, December 2022). Rolex’s own statement on Watches of Switzerland’s site calls the watches “fully serviced and guaranteed by us”. Ask the retailer what work was done on the specific watch, and ask for it in writing.

Fratello also noted that a watch with period-incorrect parts “will not be brought back to its original state” (Fratello, December 2022). Certification confirms the watch is genuine and working, not that every part is the one fitted at the factory.

WatchesbySJX reported that a certified watch may also come with “the original guarantee card and accessories if available” (WatchesbySJX, December 2022). That depends on what the previous owner handed in.

Rolex certified pre-owned vs pre-owned: what is the difference?

The certified route puts Rolex’s checks and Rolex’s guarantee behind the watch. The ordinary pre-owned route puts the seller’s checks and the seller’s terms behind it. Both can sell genuine watches in good order. What changes is who has inspected the watch, who you go back to if it goes wrong, and how much checking is left to you.

Rolex Certified Pre-Owned Ordinary pre-owned (dealer) Ordinary pre-owned (private seller)
Who checks the watch Rolex, to the same controls as its after-sales service (Watches of Switzerland) The dealer, to its own standard Nobody, unless you arrange it
Who sells it Official Rolex Retailers in the programme (Senatus, 2022; Watches of Switzerland; Goldsmiths) Independent dealer, marketplace seller or auction house An individual
Guarantee Two-year international Rolex guarantee from the date of purchase (Watches of Switzerland) The dealer’s own warranty, if it offers one Usually none
Paperwork you get Seal, guarantee card, service booklet and official papers (Watches of Switzerland) Whatever came with the watch, plus the dealer’s receipt Whatever came with the watch
Age of watch At least three years old (Senatus, 2022) Any age Any age
Your legal rights Consumer Rights Act 2015 applies, as you buy from a trader Consumer Rights Act 2015 applies if the dealer is a UK trader Fewer rights in a private sale

“Pre-owned” from a dealer covers a wide spread of practice. Some dealers have their own workshops and give long warranties; others sell watches as they found them. That is why the label matters less than the terms in writing.

What does the two-year CPO guarantee cover?

It is an international Rolex guarantee that starts on the date you buy the certified watch and runs for two years. The guarantee card that comes with the watch, together with the seal, attests that the watch is authentic and works properly (Watches of Switzerland). Because it is Rolex’s guarantee, the Rolex service network handles claims, not just the shop that sold it.

For comparison, Rolex extended its guarantee on new watches to five years for watches sold from 1 July 2015 (WatchesbySJX, 2015). A Rolex returned from a full service at an Official Rolex Retailer comes with “an international two-year service guarantee covering replacement parts and labour” (Mappin & Webb). So a certified watch’s cover is the same length as a service guarantee, and shorter than a new watch’s.

Like any guarantee, it does not replace your statutory rights. If you buy from a trader, the goods must match their description (Consumer Rights Act 2015, section 11), and you have a short-term right to reject faulty goods within 30 days (section 22). Our guide to how watch warranties work explains how the two fit together.

Two further parts of the Act matter for a pre-owned watch. A guarantee given free by a business “takes effect, at the time the goods are delivered, as a contractual obligation owed by the guarantor” on the terms of the guarantee and any advertising for it (section 30). And if a fault appears within six months of delivery, the law presumes the watch did not conform when it was delivered, unless the trader shows otherwise (section 19(14) and (15)). That presumption applies to a dealer’s ordinary pre-owned sale as much as to a certified one.

What about the original five-year guarantee?

A watch has to be at least three years old to enter the programme, and new Rolex watches sold from 1 July 2015 carry a five-year guarantee (WatchesbySJX, 2015). So a certified watch between three and five years old may still be inside its first guarantee when you buy it. JCK reported that a certified watch carries an international guarantee lasting two years from its resale date (JCK, May 2023).

Whether any time left on the first guarantee also counts is a question for the retailer, so ask, and keep the original card if it comes with the watch. The same question applies to an ordinary pre-owned Rolex of that age bought from a dealer: ask whether the original card was completed at the first sale and how much time is left on it.

Illustrative example: how the cover lines up

This is an illustrative example, not a real transaction. Say a watch was first sold new in March 2022 and you buy it pre-owned in November 2026, when it is four years and eight months old. Here is how each layer of cover would run if you bought it certified from a retailer, or ordinary pre-owned from a dealer that gives a 12-month warranty.

Layer of cover Certified route Dealer route (12-month warranty assumed) Where it comes from
Original Rolex guarantee Five years from first sale, to March 2027, if it applies to you Same, if the card was completed at first sale and it applies to you WatchesbySJX, 2015
Second-hand guarantee Rolex CPO guarantee to November 2028 Dealer warranty to November 2027, on the dealer’s terms Watches of Switzerland; JCK, May 2023
Short-term right to reject 30 days, to December 2026 30 days, to December 2026 Consumer Rights Act 2015, s.22
Fault presumed present at delivery Six months, to May 2027 Six months, to May 2027 Consumer Rights Act 2015, s.19(14)
Who handles a claim The Rolex service network The dealer, or whoever its terms name Watches of Switzerland; dealer’s terms

The statutory layers are the same on both routes; the second-hand guarantee and who you deal with differ. With a private seller, the Consumer Rights Act layers would not apply, as it covers sales by a trader.

Where can you buy Rolex Certified Pre-Owned in the UK?

Only from Official Rolex Retailers that have joined the programme. In the UK it launched at Bucherer in December 2022 (Senatus, 2022), and Watches of Switzerland and Goldsmiths both describe themselves as part of the network of Official Rolex Retailers authorised to sell Rolex Certified Pre-Owned watches (Watches of Switzerland; Goldsmiths).

The programme is open to Official Rolex Retailers that join it (Senatus, 2022), so ask a retailer whether it sells certified watches before you travel. Goldsmiths’ store page says it follows “the Rolex certification programme to guarantee the authenticity” of the second-hand watch (Goldsmiths).

What some UK retailers say on their own pages about the programme:

Retailer What its own page says Source
Watches of Switzerland Part of the network of Official Rolex Retailers authorised to sell Rolex Certified Pre-Owned watches; directs buyers to a store finder to book an appointment Watches of Switzerland
Mappin & Webb An Official Rolex Retailer “authorized to sell Rolex Certified Pre-Owned timepieces”; “We follow the Rolex certification programme to guarantee the authenticity of your second-hand Rolex watch” (Bluewater store page) Mappin & Webb, Bluewater
Goldsmiths Follows “the Rolex certification programme to guarantee the authenticity” of the second-hand watch (Liverpool store page) Goldsmiths

Bucherer has a further connection to Rolex. In August 2023 Rolex agreed to buy Bucherer, which WatchesbySJX described as “the largest retail partner for Rolex”. The report said Bucherer “will remain as an independent business after the takeover”, that the deal needed approval from competition authorities, and that Bucherer had been the first retailer in the world to join the programme (WatchesbySJX, August 2023). That makes Bucherer both a retailer in the programme and a business Rolex agreed to buy.

The programme is not limited to the UK. JCK reported that Rolex began rolling it out in the United States on 3 May 2023, starting with Tourneau/Bucherer and Watches of Switzerland, with other official retailers to follow (JCK, May 2023). The guarantee is international, but buying a certified watch abroad and bringing it home is still an import. Our guide to import duty and VAT on watches covers what you may owe on arrival.

The catalogue of certified watches can include models Rolex no longer makes. Goldsmiths’ Rolex Certified Pre-Owned menu lists Cellini, GMT-Master, Milgauss and Pearlmaster alongside current collections (Goldsmiths). For the wider picture of buying routes, see the Rolex brand guide.

Do certified pre-owned Rolex watches cost more?

Reports say they generally do. Coronet, a jewellery trade publication, reported in October 2023 on a WatchCharts and Morgan Stanley study that compared each Rolex CPO listing with typical prices for the same watch from non-Rolex-certified dealers in the same region. It put the premium at “well over 20%”, topping 30% in Europe.

The same article says the premium had risen from 20% to 25% in the previous quarter to 28% to 30% (Coronet, 18 October 2023). Those are figures for one period, reported three years ago, and they will not hold for a given watch today. Compare like for like when you shop: the same reference, a similar condition, and what comes with it, including the guarantee.

What do you get from an independent pre-owned dealer?

You get the dealer’s checks, the dealer’s warranty and the dealer’s returns policy, which differ from one business to the next. A good dealer will tell you who inspected the watch, what was replaced, how long its warranty runs and who does the repair. None of it is backed by Rolex, so the dealer’s standing matters.

An independent dealer is not appointed by Rolex. It may sell watches of any age, with or without box and papers, and it is not limited to the programme’s three-year minimum (Senatus, 2022). The guide to grey market versus authorised dealers explains how independent sellers differ from appointed retailers, and our comparison of a dealer and a marketplace shows how two large online sellers differ.

With any ordinary pre-owned Rolex, do the checks the certified route would do for you:

  • Ask for the serial and reference numbers and check they match the papers and any service records.
  • Search the serial on a stolen-watch register before you pay. The Watch Register, part of the Art Loss Register, says it holds over 125,000 lost or stolen watches (The Watch Register). See our stolen watch check guide.
  • Have the watch checked by a watchmaker you choose. Our Rolex authenticity checklist covers what to look at.
  • Get the warranty, returns period and authenticity promise in writing.

If a watch has no box or papers, read buying a Rolex without box and papers first.

A dealer’s warranty can differ in what it covers as well as how long it runs. Watchscanning reports, for example, that Watchfinder’s 24-month warranty covers the movement and internal mechanics but not cosmetic damage, water damage from improper use, or damage caused by unauthorised service work (Watchscanning). Ask any dealer for the exclusions as well as the length.

Is every “certified pre-owned” watch part of Rolex’s programme?

No. “Certified” is an ordinary word, and some dealers use it for their own inspection schemes. Rolex Certified Pre-Owned means a watch with the Rolex seal and a Rolex guarantee card, sold by an Official Rolex Retailer in the programme. A dealer’s “certified” watch is backed by that dealer, however good its checks.

WatchesbySJX noted at launch that authorised retailers such as Bucherer already ran their own dealer-certified pre-owned sales before Rolex’s programme existed (WatchesbySJX, December 2022). Other brands have set up manufacturer programmes too. Richemont’s 2025 annual report says Watchfinder & Co. launched a manufacturer-certified pre-owned programme with Vacheron Constantin, another Richemont brand (Richemont, 2025).

To tell the two apart on a Rolex listing, check three things:

  • The seal and card. The Rolex programme gives a Certified Pre-Owned seal and a guarantee card (Watches of Switzerland). Ask to see both.
  • The seller. Only Official Rolex Retailers in the programme sell Rolex Certified Pre-Owned watches. An independent dealer cannot, whatever it calls its own stock.
  • Whose guarantee it is. The listing should say whether the cover comes from Rolex or from the seller.

How do you choose between the two?

It depends on what you value. The certified route suits a buyer who wants Rolex’s own checks and guarantee and is buying from a Rolex retailer anyway. An ordinary pre-owned purchase suits a buyer who wants a wider choice of ages, references and sellers, and is willing to do or pay for the checks.

Questions that help you decide:

  1. Do you want the guarantee from Rolex or from a seller? A certified watch has Rolex’s two-year cover. A dealer’s warranty may run longer or shorter; read its terms.
  2. Is the watch you want available in the programme? The three-year minimum and each retailer’s stock limit what you can find.
  3. How much checking will you do yourself? Outside the programme, the serial check, register search and watchmaker’s inspection fall to you.
  4. How soon will the watch need a service? A certified watch has been through Rolex’s controls. For any other watch, ask when it was last serviced and by whom; our guide to watch servicing costs explains what a service involves. When Rolex moved to a five-year guarantee in 2015, aBlogtoWatch reported that it was also said to recommend a service interval of about ten years, up from three (aBlogtoWatch, 2015).
  5. Do you want to be able to see the watch first? Certified watches are sold through retailers, often by appointment (Watches of Switzerland). An online dealer may ship to you with a return period instead.

Frequently asked questions

What does Rolex Certified Pre-Owned mean?

It means a second-hand Rolex that has passed Rolex’s checks, carries a Rolex Certified Pre-Owned seal, and is sold by an Official Rolex Retailer in the programme with a two-year international Rolex guarantee (Watches of Switzerland).

When did Rolex Certified Pre-Owned start?

In December 2022, first at Bucherer boutiques in six countries including the UK. Other Official Rolex Retailers could join from spring 2023 (Senatus, 2022).

How long is the Rolex CPO guarantee?

Two years, international, starting from the date of purchase (Watches of Switzerland).

How old does a Rolex have to be to be certified pre-owned?

At least three years old at resale, according to Senatus’s December 2022 report on the launch.

Is a pre-owned Rolex from a dealer less genuine than a CPO one?

No. A dealer can sell a genuine watch in good order. The difference is who has checked it and who guarantees it: with CPO, Rolex; with a dealer, the dealer.

Does a CPO Rolex come with box and papers?

It comes with a Rolex Certified Pre-Owned pouch, seal, two-year guarantee card, service booklet and official papers (Watches of Switzerland). Ask the retailer whether the watch’s original box and papers are also included.

Can I buy a Rolex Certified Pre-Owned watch online in the UK?

Watches of Switzerland’s Certified Pre-Owned page directs buyers to a store finder to book an appointment (Watches of Switzerland). Ask each retailer how it sells certified watches.

Is a CPO Rolex more expensive than other pre-owned watches?

Reports say yes. Coronet (October 2023) reported a WatchCharts and Morgan Stanley study putting the premium over non-certified dealers at well over 20%, and over 30% in Europe, at that time.

Do I still have consumer rights when I buy a CPO Rolex?

Yes. A guarantee is in addition to your rights. Buying from a trader, goods must match their description, and you can reject faulty goods within 30 days (Consumer Rights Act 2015, sections 11 and 22).

Can a Rolex from a dealer still be serviced by Rolex?

Yes. Every Official Rolex Retailer and Rolex affiliate is authorised to receive a Rolex for servicing, and a full service comes with a two-year service guarantee (Mappin & Webb).

Is every certified pre-owned Rolex fully serviced?

Reports differ. WatchesbySJX said watches are serviced at an official Rolex service centre before sale; Fratello wrote that certification does not mean Rolex services each watch (both December 2022). Ask the retailer what was done to the watch you are looking at.

Does Rolex own Bucherer?

Rolex agreed to buy Bucherer in August 2023, subject to competition approval, and said Bucherer would remain an independent business (WatchesbySJX, August 2023).

This page is general information, not financial or legal advice. Watch60 is independent and has no commercial relationship with Rolex or any retailer named.
