Who are Gucci?
Gucci is an Italian fashion house founded in Florence in 1921 by Guccio Gucci and owned by the French luxury group Kering. Most of what it sells is fashion and leather goods, but it has made Gucci watches since 1972 (Wikipedia; Jura Watches). This page is about those watches: their history, the current collections, who owns the company, and what to check when buying a pre-owned Gucci watch in the UK.
Gucci watches are Swiss made, with both quartz and mechanical movements; Europa Star reported that the first mechanical Gucci watch came in 2001 (WorldTempus; Europa Star). In 2021 Gucci introduced its first in-house calibre, the GG727.25, in the Gucci 25H (Wallpaper).
The history of Gucci watches
Gucci’s watch history runs from a licence agreed in 1972 to a watch business owned by Gucci itself from 1997, with mechanical watches from 2001 and its own movement from 2021. The key dates are the Model 2000 (1972), the purchase of Severin Montres (1997), Kering ownership (1999) and the Gucci 25H (2021).
The licence. In 1972 Aldo Gucci met Severin Wunderman, a Belgian-born businessman who had founded Severin Montres in California, and the licence they agreed led to Gucci’s first wristwatches (Jura Watches). Wikipedia dates the first Gucci watch, the Model 2000, to 1972, and reports that in 1974 it broke a record by selling more than one million units in two years.
Gucci takes control. In 1997, under chief executive Domenico De Sole, Gucci bought Severin Montres, giving it control of watch design, production and distribution (Europa Star, 2003). Gucci formed an alliance with Pinault-Printemps-Redoute in 1999 (Europa Star), and Wikipedia says it became a subsidiary of the group, now Kering, that year. Europa Star reported that Gucci launched its first mechanical watch, with a hand-wound movement, in 2001.
Swiss production. Jura Watches says Gucci chose La Chaux-de-Fonds, in the canton of Neuchâtel, to make its watches, but gives no date. Wallpaper says the 25H movement was developed by Kering’s movement manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Kering also controlled the Swiss watchmakers Girard-Perregaux and Ulysse Nardin until it sold them in 2022 (aBlogtoWatch).
Recent collections. The Gucci Dive was launched in 2013, and quartz versions in 32 mm, 40 mm and 45 mm followed in 2015 (WorldTempus). The Grip was the focus of Gucci’s stand at Baselworld 2019 (Wanted). To mark its centenary in 2021, Gucci launched the 25H with the GG727.25 calibre (Wallpaper), and in 2024 it presented a 25H Minute Repeater (Watchonista).
What is Gucci known for in watches?
In watches, Gucci is known for fashion-led designs that use the house’s motifs, such as the bee and the Interlocking G, in Swiss-made quartz and mechanical watches. Since 2021 it has also made more complicated watches, including a minute repeater, and its own calibre developed within Kering. The details below are each sourced.
House motifs. The bee on many G-Timeless dials was first introduced to Gucci in the 1970s (Europa Star, 2020). The 2024 Dive models carry the Interlocking G on the dial (Haute Time).
Quartz and mechanical. The 2015 Gucci Dive models have a Swiss-made quartz movement (WorldTempus). The G-Timeless was also made in eight Swiss-made automatic versions in 2020 (Europa Star), and the 2024 Dive models are automatic (Haute Time). Our guide to mechanical and quartz watches explains how they differ in servicing and use.
Complications. The 25H Minute Repeater of 2024 chimes the hours, quarters and minutes with three hammers and is set off by turning the bezel rather than a pusher. Watchonista describes its movement as made in-house, with 340 hand-assembled components, in a 40 mm white gold case 9.9 mm thick.
Which Gucci watch collections are there?
Gucci’s current watch collections include the Gucci 25H, the G-Timeless, the Gucci Dive and the Gucci Grip. The collections table gives a one-line description of each.
A few points help when you are reading listings:
- Same name, different movement. The Dive has been sold in quartz and automatic versions (WorldTempus; Haute Time), and the G-Timeless in automatic versions (Europa Star). Check which movement a listing describes.
- 25H. The 25H name covers everyday models and complications such as the 2024 minute repeater (Goldsmiths; Watchonista). The reference number tells you which.
- Older models. Gucci has made watches since 1972, so older quartz models, including the Model 2000, turn up second-hand (Wikipedia).
Who owns Gucci?
Gucci is owned by Kering, the French luxury group formerly called PPR. Gucci became its subsidiary in 1999. In the UK, Gucci Limited, a company that sells Gucci clothing, leather goods, watches and jewellery, is controlled by Kering SA.
Companies House records Gucci Limited as incorporated on 14 December 1961, with Kering SA holding 75% or more of the shares and voting rights (Companies House). Its registered business activities include the retail sale of watches and jewellery (Companies House). Kering’s UK services company, Kering UK Services Limited, was previously named Gucci Group Services Limited (Companies House). We could not reach Kering’s own site to confirm Gucci’s current management.
Buying a pre-owned Gucci watch in the UK: what to check
Check that the model and movement match the listing, that the serial number on the caseback matches any warranty card, and that the watch is not recorded as stolen. If the watch is quartz, ask when the battery was last changed. Then decide what protection you need, since a private sale gives you fewer legal rights than buying from a dealer.
1. Papers and the full set. Ask which papers and box come with the watch and whether they are originals. Our guide to what “full set” means explains what each item proves.
2. Movement. Ask whether the watch is quartz or automatic. For quartz watches, ask when the battery was last changed and whether the water resistance was checked afterwards.
3. Authenticity. Buy from a seller who will put authenticity in writing and accept returns, and check the Swiss Made marking and serial number. Our guide on how to spot a fake watch covers what to look at.
4. Stolen-watch check. Check the serial number against a stolen-watch register and ask the seller to confirm the watch is not reported lost or stolen. Our stolen-watch check guide lists the UK registers.
5. Warranty. Gucci’s warranty terms could not be confirmed from Gucci or Kering. See watch warranties explained.
6. Who you buy from. A dealer and a private seller give you different rights. Our guide to buying from a private seller or a dealer compares them, and our guide to your consumer rights buying a watch online explains what UK law gives you when you buy from a business.
