Who are F.P. Journe?
F.P. Journe is a Swiss watchmaker in Geneva, founded in 1999 by the French-born watchmaker François-Paul Journe, whose name is on every dial. The company, Montres Journe SA, is privately held (Wikipedia). This page covers its history, collections and ownership, then what to check when buying a pre-owned F.P. Journe in the UK.
The company makes a small number of watches: about 1,000 a year, according to its own press material (F.P. Journe). Its mechanical movements are designed and made in-house, in 18-carat rose gold (F.P. Journe). The watches are signed “Invenit et Fecit”, Latin for “invented and made”, which the company says was the wording 18th-century masters put on watches accepted by the French Académie Royale des Sciences (F.P. Journe).
The history of F.P. Journe
F.P. Journe’s history begins with one watchmaker’s training in Paris and decades of one-off pieces, and continues with the company he founded in Geneva in 1999. The key dates are the Tourbillon Souverain prototype (1991), the first collection (1999), the Chronomètre à Résonance (2000), the first boutique (2003), and Chanel’s minority stake (2018).
Training in Paris. François-Paul Journe was born in Marseille in 1957. He was sent to a technical college at 14 and graduated from the Paris watchmaking school in 1976 (Wikipedia). He then trained under his uncle, Michel Journe, who restored antique clocks and watches in a workshop in Saint-Germain-des-Prés (F.P. Journe). The company’s account says working on pieces by 18th-century makers such as Abraham-Louis Breguet and Antide Janvier shaped his approach.
One-off pieces. At 20 he began building his first tourbillon pocket watch, a project that took five years and drew on the work of Breguet and the books of George Daniels (F.P. Journe). He opened his own workshop on rue de Verneuil in Paris, where collectors commissioned pieces from him. He created his remontoire system in 1982, while making his second tourbillon pocket watch, and began researching resonance in 1983 (F.P. Journe). He also designed movements and clocks for luxury houses, and set up a business in Switzerland to develop movements for the industry (F.P. Journe).
The first collection. In 1991 he finished the prototype of the Tourbillon Souverain, with the movement and gear trains in 18-carat gold (F.P. Journe). In 1999 he presented his own collection of precision chronometers signed F.P. Journe – Invenit et Fecit, and founded his manufacture (F.P. Journe). The Tourbillon Souverain, launched that year, is described by the company as the first wristwatch to combine a tourbillon with a constant-force remontoire. The Chronomètre à Résonance followed in 2000 (F.P. Journe).
Boutiques and growth. The first F.P. Journe boutique opened in Tokyo in 2003 (F.P. Journe). The company’s own boutiques now number 12, including Geneva, Paris, New York and London (F.P. Journe, 2025). The watchmaker’s workshops are on rue de l’Arquebuse in Geneva, in a listed building dating from 1892 (F.P. Journe). Since 2023, the company’s dial maker, Les Cadraniers de Genève, and case maker, Les Boîtiers de Genève, have worked from a purpose-built building in Meyrin (F.P. Journe). In 2016 the company launched its Patrimoine Service for older watches (F.P. Journe), and in 2018 Chanel took a 20% stake (SJX Watches).
What is F.P. Journe known for?
F.P. Journe is known for gold movements, for watches built around one man’s inventions, such as the resonance chronometer and the remontoire tourbillon, and for its results at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. It also sells mainly through its own boutiques rather than through a wide dealer network.
Gold movements. The company says it was the first in watchmaking to make its movements in 18-carat rose gold, and that all its exclusive mechanical calibres are designed and made in-house (F.P. Journe). Our guide to in-house and outsourced movements explains why this matters to buyers.
Resonance. The Chronomètre à Résonance has two independent balances with no mechanical connection between them. The company says resonance makes them synchronise, which improves accuracy by cancelling out outside disturbances (F.P. Journe). Its press material says the watch took more than fifteen years to develop, starting from experiments with a pocket watch (F.P. Journe).
Prizes. F.P. Journe’s press material lists seven prizes at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, including three Aiguilles d’Or: the Tourbillon Souverain in 2004, the Sonnerie Souveraine in 2006 and the Centigraphe Souverain in 2008 (F.P. Journe). Wikipedia states that Journe is the only watchmaker to have won the Aiguille d’Or three times.
The Octa movement. The Octa is the company’s automatic calibre, built to take a range of complications (F.P. Journe). Sources from the company give different power reserves: its 2025 press kit says 160 hours, while a page on its website describes a power reserve of 120 hours.
François-Paul Journe’s training links the company to other independent watchmakers: he co-founded THA in 1989 with Denis Flageollet, who went on to found De Bethune. Journe’s own investors and acquisitions connect the company to two further brands covered on Watch60: Chanel, which bought a 20% stake in 2018, and Ebel, which a buyer group led by Montres Journe SA agreed to buy a majority of in October 2026.
Which F.P. Journe collections are there?
F.P. Journe’s current range has three collections: Classique (chronometers and complications with gold movements), lineSport (sports watches) and élégante (electromechanical watches). Boutique-only Black Label editions and older watches from the Patrimoine Service are sold alongside them.
The collections table gives a one-line description of each. A few points help when you are reading listings:
- Souverain and Souveraine. Many Classique models carry “Souverain” or “Souveraine” in their names, such as the Tourbillon Souverain, Chronomètre Souverain and Répétition Souveraine (F.P. Journe). Check the full model name and reference, not just the family.
- Movement materials vary. In the lineSport collection, the Automatique Réserve, Centigraphe and Chronographe Rattrapante come in titanium with an aluminium movement, or in platinum or 18-carat gold with a gold movement (F.P. Journe). The Chronomètre Furtif has a tungsten carbide case and bracelet (F.P. Journe).
- The élégante is not mechanical. Its calibre 1210 is electromechanical. The company states eight to ten years of running in daily use and up to 18 years in standby; the watch goes to sleep after 35 minutes without movement and resets its hands when worn again (F.P. Journe). Our guide to mechanical and quartz watches explains the difference.
- Discontinued models. The Patrimoine Service exists because many F.P. Journe models are no longer made (F.P. Journe), so second-hand listings often include watches that are not on the current website.
Who owns F.P. Journe?
F.P. Journe is privately owned. Chanel bought a 20% stake in Montres Journe in 2018, and SJX Watches reported that the existing shareholders included a Belgian watch retailer and a Swiss property investor. The company is not listed and does not publish how its remaining shares are divided.
The Chanel stake was confirmed by both companies in September 2018. SJX Watches reported at the time that production would stay at about 900 watches a year and that nothing would change in how the company was run. Wikipedia gives the same 20% figure and says the amount was not disclosed. François-Paul Journe’s own shareholding is not public.
Buying a pre-owned F.P. Journe in the UK: what to check
Check that the case number matches the papers, that you know which version and movement the watch has, and that it is not recorded as stolen. Then decide what guarantee you need: watches from F.P. Journe’s own Patrimoine Service come with a new three-year sales warranty.
1. Papers and the full set. Ask exactly which items come with the watch, such as the box, warranty card and any service papers, and whether they are originals. Our guide to what “full set” means explains what each item proves and what it does not.
2. The case number. F.P. Journe engraves each chronometer’s case back with its individual number (F.P. Journe). That number should match the papers and any receipts. A seller who will not show it before you pay is a reason to walk away.
3. Authenticity and the right movement. Confirm that the dial, case metal and movement material match the model and reference in the listing, because the same model can come with gold or aluminium movements (F.P. Journe). Buy from a seller who will put authenticity in writing and accept returns, and have the watch checked by a watchmaker you choose. Our guide on how to spot a fake watch covers what a watchmaker looks at.
4. Stolen-watch check. Before you pay, check the case number against a stolen-watch register and ask the seller to confirm the watch is not reported lost or stolen. Our stolen-watch check guide lists the UK registers.
5. Servicing and warranty. Ask when the watch was last serviced, by whom, and for the paperwork. Wikipedia reports that the company services Patrimoine watches at its Geneva headquarters. The length of F.P. Journe’s warranty on new watches, and whether it passes to a later owner, depends on the company’s terms. A dealer’s own warranty is a promise from the dealer, not from F.P. Journe. See watch warranties explained.
6. Who you buy from. There are three main routes:
| Route | What it is | Guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Patrimoine Service | Out-of-production watches bought back by F.P. Journe and offered on request in its boutiques, including London | New three-year sales warranty |
| Independent dealer | A dealer selling second-hand watches it has bought | The dealer’s own warranty, if offered |
| Private seller or marketplace | An individual, or a platform connecting buyers and sellers | Usually none beyond the platform’s buyer protection |

F.P. Journe’s London boutique is at 33 Bruton Street, in Mayfair; the company’s press release announcing it is dated 15 December 2023 (F.P. Journe), while Wikipedia gives September 2023 as the opening date. If you buy from a boutique or dealer outside the UK, such as in Geneva or Paris, the watch is an import and VAT and duty can apply; our guide to import duty and VAT on watches explains how.
