Who are Grand Seiko?

Grand Seiko is a Japanese watch brand owned by Seiko. The first Grand Seiko was made in December 1960, and in March 2017 Seiko began presenting it as a brand of its own rather than a top line within Seiko. This page covers its history, collections and ownership, then what to check when buying a pre-owned Grand Seiko in the UK.

Grand Seiko watches are made in Japan, at two studios. Mechanical watches come from Shizukuishi in Iwate Prefecture, and Spring Drive and quartz watches from the Shinshu Watch Studio in Shiojiri, Nagano (Grand Seiko; Wikipedia). The brand describes its aim as “accuracy, legibility, and beauty” (Grand Seiko), and its range covers three kinds of movement: mechanical, quartz and its own hybrid, Spring Drive.

The history of Grand Seiko

Grand Seiko’s history runs from a single hand-wound watch in 1960 to a separate brand within the Seiko group in 2017. The key dates are the first watch (1960), its own accuracy standard (1966), the 44GS design (1967), the return with quartz (1988), Spring Drive (2004) and the split from the Seiko name (2017).

Seiko before Grand Seiko. The group behind the brand began in 1881, when Kintaro Hattori opened K. Hattori, a watch and clock shop in Tokyo. Seikosha, its factory, started making wall clocks in 1892, and the first Seiko-brand watch followed in 1924 (Seiko Group).

The first Grand Seiko. Seiko then made watches through two companies, Suwa Seikosha and Daini Seikosha (Wikipedia). Suwa Seikosha introduced the first Grand Seiko in December 1960, with the hand-wound calibre 3180 (Wikipedia). Grand Seiko says it had a large balance wheel, fine regulation and its own certification process (Grand Seiko).

The 1960s. A date model, the Self-Dater, followed in 1964 with water resistance raised to 50 metres. In 1966 Grand Seiko set its own accuracy standard for mechanical watches, at first +6 to −3 seconds a day, tightened to +5 to −3 in 1969. In 1967 Daini Seikosha made the 44GS, and the first automatic Grand Seiko, the 62GS, appeared. In 1968 came the 61GS, an automatic at 36,000 vibrations an hour (5 Hz), and the hand-wound 45GS (Grand Seiko). Wikipedia describes the 44GS as the first complete expression of what the company later called the “Grand Seiko Style”.

Quartz and a pause. Seiko launched the Quartz Astron in 1969, which the group calls the world’s first quartz watch (Seiko Group). The Grand Seiko name then went unused for a period. It returned in 1988 with the quartz 95GS, and the 9F quartz calibre followed in 1993 (Wikipedia; Grand Seiko).

Mechanical again, then Spring Drive. In 1998 the 9S55 became the first new Grand Seiko mechanical movement in about two decades (Wikipedia). Spring Drive, an idea from the Seiko engineer Yoshikazu Akahane in the 1970s, took about 20 years to develop and became a Grand Seiko movement in 2004 (Grand Seiko). The high-beat 36,000-vibration movement returned in 2009 with the 9S85 (Wikipedia).

A separate brand. At Baselworld in March 2017, Seiko said Grand Seiko would from then on be “an entirely separate brand”, with the Grand Seiko logo alone at 12 o’clock on all its watches (Seiko Watch Corporation). Before this, many Grand Seiko dials carried the Seiko name at 12 o’clock. Wikipedia notes that the ownership did not change.

Recent years. A new studio at Shizukuishi opened in 2020, the same year the Evolution 9 design code was introduced (Wikipedia). In 2023 the Tentagraph became the first Grand Seiko mechanical chronograph (Grand Seiko).

What is Grand Seiko known for?

Grand Seiko is known for Spring Drive, its own accuracy standard, the 9F quartz movement, and Zaratsu polishing of cases. It is also known for dials that draw on Japanese landscapes, such as the White Birch. The details below are each sourced.

Spring Drive. A Spring Drive watch is powered by a mainspring, as a mechanical watch is, but its speed is controlled by an integrated circuit and a quartz crystal rather than a balance wheel (Grand Seiko). The seconds hand glides rather than ticking. Grand Seiko’s newer calibre 9RA5 has a five-day power reserve and is rated at ±10 seconds a month, against ±15 seconds for the 9R6 family that most of the range uses (Grand Seiko). Our guide to mechanical and quartz watches explains the two technologies Spring Drive combines.

Its own accuracy standard. Grand Seiko does not send its mechanical movements to COSC, the Swiss testing institute that certifies chronometers for brands such as Omega. It applies its own standard instead. For the calibre 9SA5 it states a mean daily rate of +5 to −3 seconds, measured before casing in six positions over 12 days (Grand Seiko). COSC requires −4 to +6 seconds a day over 15 days in five positions and at three temperatures (COSC). Our guide to COSC certification explains what such tests measure.

The 9F quartz calibre. Created in 1993, the 9F is rated at ±10 seconds a year, and has a mechanism that changes the date instantly at midnight (Grand Seiko).

High-beat movements. The 61GS of 1968 ran at 36,000 vibrations an hour, and the brand returned to this frequency in 2009 (Grand Seiko; Wikipedia). The 9SA5, presented in 2020, uses a new Dual Impulse Escapement and has about 80 hours of power reserve (Grand Seiko).

Movements made by Seiko. Every Grand Seiko movement is designed and made within Seiko’s own facilities, at Shizukuishi or Shinshu (Grand Seiko). Our guide to in-house and outsourced movements explains why buyers care about the difference.

Zaratsu polishing. Craftsmen press each case against a rotating disc, judging angle and pressure by eye and touch, to give flat, polished surfaces. Most of this work is on steel and titanium (Grand Seiko).

Which Grand Seiko collections are there?

Grand Seiko groups its range into five collections: Heritage, Evolution 9, Elegance, Sport and Masterpiece. Each one includes mechanical, Spring Drive or quartz models, so the collection name tells you the design family, not the movement.

The collections table on this page gives a one-line description of each. A few points help when you are reading listings:

  • Reference numbers. Every model has a reference starting with S, such as SLGH005 for the White Birch with calibre 9SA5 (Grand Seiko). The reference identifies the exact model; the serial number on the caseback identifies the individual watch. Check both against the papers.
  • Movement letters. The calibre tells you what is inside: 9S is mechanical, 9R is Spring Drive and 9F is quartz (Grand Seiko). Two watches that look the same may have different movements, so check the calibre, not just the dial.
  • Older dials. Watches made before 2017 often say Seiko at 12 o’clock and Grand Seiko at 6 o’clock (Seiko Watch Corporation). This is normal for the period and is not a sign that a watch is fake.
  • Limited editions. Grand Seiko releases limited editions as well as regular models, such as the 2017 SBGR305, a modern take on the first 1960 watch (SJX Watches). If you do not recognise a reference, check it on the brand’s own site.

Who owns Grand Seiko?

Grand Seiko is owned by Seiko Watch Corporation, which is a subsidiary of Seiko Group Corporation, a Tokyo company listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The 2017 change made Grand Seiko a separate brand, but not a separate company: the ownership stayed with Seiko.

Wikipedia states that Grand Seiko “is owned by Seiko Watch Corporation, a subsidiary of Seiko Group Corporation”. Seiko Watch Corporation took over the group’s watch business in 2001, when the parent became a holding company, and Seiko Instruments’ watch business was moved into it in 2020 (Wikipedia, Seiko). The parent was called Seiko Holdings Corporation until it changed its name to Seiko Group Corporation in 2022 (Seiko Group). Its group companies include Seiko Watch Corporation, Seiko Instruments and the Ginza retailer Wako (Seiko Group).

One detail can confuse buyers. The Shinshu Watch Studio, where Spring Drive and quartz Grand Seikos are made, sits inside a Seiko Epson facility (Grand Seiko). Seiko Epson grew out of Suwa Seikosha but is now a separate listed company, run independently of the Seiko Group (Wikipedia, Seiko). Grand Seiko’s nearest Japanese rival for fit and finish at a similar price is often Citizen, though the two are unrelated companies.

In the UK, Seiko U.K. Limited was incorporated on 29 November 1971 and lists the wholesale and retail sale of watches as its business. Companies House records Seiko Group Corporation as holding 75% or more of its shares (Companies House). Seiko opened a London boutique on Brompton Road in August 2017 with a large Grand Seiko area (PR Newswire).

Buying a pre-owned Grand Seiko in the UK: what to check

Check that the reference, calibre and serial number on the watch match its papers, that the papers and any service records are genuine, and that the watch is not recorded as stolen. Then check which warranty, if any, is left, and who gives it.

1. Papers and the full set. Ask exactly what comes with the watch: box, warranty card, booklet, receipt, spare links, and whether each is the original. Our guide to what “full set” means explains what each item proves and what it does not.

2. Reference, calibre and serial number. The reference and serial number on the caseback should match the warranty card and any receipt. Look up the reference on Grand Seiko’s site to confirm the calibre: a listing that calls a 9R watch “mechanical”, or a 9F watch “automatic”, is a sign the seller has not checked.

3. Authenticity. Fake Grand Seikos exist, and fakes can come with forged papers. A Spring Drive seconds hand should glide rather than tick (Grand Seiko), but that alone does not prove a watch is genuine. Buy from a seller who will put authenticity in writing and accept returns, and have the watch checked by a watchmaker you choose. Our guide on how to spot a fake watch covers what a watchmaker looks at.

4. Stolen-watch check. Before you pay, check the serial number against a stolen-watch register and ask the seller to confirm the watch is not reported lost or stolen. Our stolen-watch check guide lists the UK registers and how to use them.

5. Servicing and condition. Ask when the watch was last serviced, by whom, and for the paperwork. Spring Drive and 9F quartz watches have electronic parts as well as mechanical ones, so ask whether the service was done by Grand Seiko or a watchmaker who works on these calibres. Look closely at the polished surfaces: heavy re-polishing removes metal and can blur the flat Zaratsu finish, which cannot easily be undone.

6. Warranty. Grand Seiko’s US boutique states that all Grand Seiko watches come with a five-year international warranty (Grand Seiko Boutique, US). A dealer’s own warranty is a promise from the dealer, not from Grand Seiko. See watch warranties explained.

7. Who you buy from. There are three main routes in the UK:

Route What it is Guarantee
Grand Seiko boutique or authorised retailer Sells new watches; some also sell second-hand stock Grand Seiko’s international warranty on new watches
Independent (grey-market) dealer A dealer not appointed by Grand Seiko, selling new or second-hand watches The dealer’s own warranty, if offered
Private seller or marketplace An individual, or a platform connecting buyers and sellers Usually none beyond the platform’s buyer protection

Grand Seiko does not run a certified pre-owned programme in the UK that we could find. For how independent dealers compare with appointed retailers, read grey market versus authorised dealer.

Frequently asked questions

Is Grand Seiko the same company as Seiko?

Grand Seiko is a separate brand, but not a separate company. It is owned by Seiko Watch Corporation, part of Seiko Group Corporation (Wikipedia).

When did Grand Seiko become independent from Seiko?

In March 2017, when Seiko announced at Baselworld that Grand Seiko would be presented as a separate brand, with only the Grand Seiko logo on the dial (Seiko Watch Corporation).

Where are Grand Seiko watches made?

In Japan. Mechanical watches are made at Shizukuishi in Iwate Prefecture, and Spring Drive and quartz watches at the Shinshu Watch Studio in Shiojiri, Nagano (Grand Seiko; Wikipedia).

What is Spring Drive?

A movement powered by a mainspring, like a mechanical watch, but regulated by an integrated circuit and quartz crystal. It became a Grand Seiko movement in 2004 (Grand Seiko).

Is Grand Seiko COSC-certified?

No. Grand Seiko tests to its own standard, first set in 1966. For the calibre 9SA5 it states +5 to −3 seconds a day (Grand Seiko).

What does 9S, 9R or 9F mean?

They are Grand Seiko’s movement families: 9S is mechanical, 9R is Spring Drive and 9F is quartz (Grand Seiko).

Why does my older Grand Seiko say Seiko on the dial?

Before 2017, many Grand Seiko dials carried the Seiko name at 12 o’clock. Since 2017 the Grand Seiko logo sits there alone (Seiko Watch Corporation).

Can I buy a pre-owned Grand Seiko without papers?

You can, but without papers you rely more heavily on the seller’s written guarantee, an independent watchmaker’s check and a stolen-watch check. Agree in writing that you get a full refund if the watch is later found not to be genuine.

What was the first Grand Seiko?

A hand-wound watch with the calibre 3180, introduced by Suwa Seikosha in December 1960 (Wikipedia).
