Who are Romain Gauthier?
Romain Gauthier is an independent watchmaker in Le Sentier, in Switzerland’s Vallée de Joux. Romain Gauthier, born in the valley in 1975, founded the company in 2005, and its first watch, the Prestige HM, appeared at Baselworld in 2007 (Romain Gauthier). It makes its own movements and also makes movement components for other brands, including Chanel, which holds a minority stake (Quill & Pad; Time+Tide). This page covers its history, collections and ownership, then what to check when buying a Romain Gauthier watch second-hand in the UK.
The company is small and does not publish production figures. Its watches are sold through authorised retailers, which also stamp the warranty card (Romain Gauthier).
The history of Romain Gauthier
Romain Gauthier’s history begins with a component maker who decided to build his own watch. The key dates are the founding (2005), the Prestige HM (2007), Chanel’s stake (2011), the Logical One (2013), the new manufacture (2014), the Insight Micro-Rotor (2017) and the C (2021).
Training and the first movement. Gauthier studied precision mechanics at the Vallée de Joux technical school from 1990, and in 1998 went to work as an automatic lathe technician at a large component supplier (Romain Gauthier). Watchonista names it as François Golay and says he stayed seven years. In 1999 he decided to design his own watch; he took an MBA between 2000 and 2002, writing the business plan for his watch company as his thesis, and visited the watchmaker Philippe Dufour in 2002 (Romain Gauthier). From 2002 to 2005 he built his movement using his employer’s machines after hours (Romain Gauthier).
The company. Gauthier founded his company in Le Sentier in 2005 and hired a watchmaker to finish and assemble Calibre HM 2206 (Romain Gauthier). Wikipedia gives 2002 as the founding year and 2006 for the Prestige HM; the company’s own account gives 2005 and 2007. The Prestige HM debuted at Baselworld in 2007, and in 2008 the company invested in CNC machines and a production team so that it could develop movements fully in-house (Romain Gauthier). The Prestige HMS, with seconds and a partly openworked dial, followed in 2010, and in 2011 a natural titanium version became the brand’s first titanium watch (Romain Gauthier).
Chanel. Chanel first approached Gauthier at Baselworld in 2011, looking for a supplier of components for a fine watchmaking project (Quill & Pad). Time+Tide says Chanel took a minority stake that year. Quill & Pad reported in 2016 that Chanel had then revealed its “friendly” stake, and that the company would continue as a standalone business.
Logical One and after. The Logical One launched in 2013 and won the Men’s Complication Watch Prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève that November (Romain Gauthier; GPHG). In 2014 production and watchmaking moved into a new manufacture in Le Sentier (Romain Gauthier). The Insight Micro-Rotor, the first automatic watch, followed in 2017, and a women’s version in 2018, the year the brand joined the SIHH fair in Geneva (Romain Gauthier). The C collection was introduced in 2021 as Continuum (Watchonista), and in 2022 the brand presented its first metal bracelet, in titanium, on the C (Romain Gauthier).
What is Romain Gauthier known for?
Romain Gauthier is known for the Logical One’s constant-force mechanism, for movements made in its own Vallée de Joux workshop, and for its work as a supplier to other watchmakers.
The Logical One. A constant-force mechanism aims to give the balance the same force whether the mainspring is fully wound or nearly run down. The traditional way is a chain and fusée, a cone-shaped pulley. In the Logical One, Gauthier replaced the cone with a snail-shaped cam (Wikipedia, citing QP magazine), and the chain is made of ruby links; the watch is wound with a push-button rather than a crown (Romain Gauthier).
Its own movements. Romain Gauthier movements are designed and made in-house, and the brand added an in-house bidirectional micro-rotor calibre, with an 80-hour power reserve, in 2017 (Romain Gauthier). Our guide to in-house and outsourced movements explains why this matters for servicing.
Components for others. Quill & Pad reported in 2016 that Gauthier’s manufacture makes movement components for other brands. For Chanel’s Calibre 1, used in the Monsieur de Chanel, it machined and finished gears, pinions, shafts, the balance wheel and the barrel drum and lid. Our Chanel page covers Chanel’s own movements and the sources’ differing accounts of Gauthier’s part in them.
Which Romain Gauthier collections are there?
Romain Gauthier’s site lists C by Romain Gauthier, Insight, Logical One and Prestige (Romain Gauthier). The collections table on this page gives the year each began. Points that help when reading listings:
- Prestige HM and HMS. The HM shows hours and minutes; the HMS of 2010 added seconds (Romain Gauthier). Check which you are being offered.
- Collection names have changed. The brand has also used group names such as Heritage, Freedom, Exception and Legacy for its watches (Romain Gauthier), and the C was first called Continuum (Watchonista). Older listings may use these names.
- Unique pieces and editions. The Exception collection, begun with the Logical One Secret Diamonds in 2014, is made up of unique pieces (Romain Gauthier). Match any edition number to the papers.
Who owns Romain Gauthier?
Romain Gauthier is an independent company with Chanel as a minority shareholder. Time+Tide dates Chanel’s minority stake to 2011; its size has not been published. When the stake became public, Quill & Pad reported that the company would stay standalone, with Gauthier keeping creative independence. Who holds the remaining shares is not published.
Chanel has made similar minority investments in other watchmakers, including Bell & Ross, F.P. Journe and MB&F (Time+Tide); our F.P. Journe page is one example.
Buying a Romain Gauthier watch second-hand in the UK: what to check
Check that the warranty card is stamped by an authorised retailer, ask for the service history from the manufacture, check the model and any edition number against the papers, and run a stolen-watch check.
1. Papers and the full set. Romain Gauthier makes watches in small numbers, so the original papers matter. Ask which items come with the watch and whether they are originals. Our guide to what “full set” means explains what each item proves.
2. Warranty. The warranty lasts two years from purchase, provided the card has been stamped, signed and dated by an authorised Romain Gauthier retailer (Romain Gauthier). It is void if anyone other than the manufacture services or repairs the watch. The terms do not say whether the warranty passes to a second owner. See watch warranties explained.
3. Servicing. Romain Gauthier recommends a service at the manufacture in Le Sentier at least every three years, arranged directly or through an authorised retailer; it says the watch goes back to the watchmaker who first assembled it (Romain Gauthier). Ask when the watch was last serviced and whether the manufacture did it. Our guide on how to care for a mechanical watch covers what a service involves.
4. Logical One winding. The Logical One is wound with a push-button, not the crown (Romain Gauthier). Ask the seller to confirm the winding works and the watch runs, and have it checked before you pay.
5. Authenticity and stolen-watch check. Buy from a seller who will put authenticity in writing and accept returns; our guide on how to spot a fake watch covers what a watchmaker looks at. Check the serial number against a stolen-watch register before you pay: our stolen-watch check guide lists the UK registers.
