What to check when buying a used Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

The Royal Oak-specific checks: which reference and movement you are looking at, how to judge the bracelet and the finishing, and what the papers and warranty give you.

By Kay Atkinson, Watch60's watch specialist · 15 min read · Updated October 2026

When buying a used Royal Oak, identify the exact reference first, then check that the movement, case size and bracelet match it. Hold the watch by the clasp to look for bracelet stretch, look at the bevels in angled light for signs of heavy polishing, and ask for the International Warranty Card and the service history.

The Royal Oak is Audemars Piguet’s steel sports watch with an octagonal bezel and a bracelet designed as part of the case, launched in April 1972 and designed by Gérald Genta (AP Chronicles, 2025). Audemars Piguet says the collection now has more than 500 versions (Audemars Piguet, checked 30 October 2026), so the reference number matters more than the name.

What should you check when buying a used Royal Oak?

Check the reference and movement, the bracelet, the finishing, the papers and the service history. A reference number is the model code, such as 15500ST, and identifies the size, movement and dial of that version. The serial number identifies the individual watch. Ask for both before you pay.

Most of the checks come down to two things. The Royal Oak’s look depends on sharp edges between brushed and polished surfaces, and its bracelet carries much of the design. Both wear and both can be altered, so look at them closely in person or ask for clear photos in angled light.

Which Royal Oak reference are you looking at?

The three-hand steel models most often offered pre-owned fall into two families: the 39 mm “Jumbo” extra-thin and the 41 mm Selfwinding. Within each family, newer references have newer movements. Check that the movement and case size match the reference on the papers.

Reference Introduced Case Calibre Power reserve
15202 (“Jumbo”) 2000 39 mm 2121 40 hours
16202 (“Jumbo”) 2022 39 mm, 8.1 mm thick 7121 55 hours
15400 2012 41 mm 3120 60 hours
15500 2019 41 mm, 10.4 mm thick 4302 70 hours
15510 2022 41 mm 4302 70 hours

Sources: AP Chronicles (Audemars Piguet), The Royal Oak "Jumbo" models (24 January 2022), for 15202 and 16202 and both calibres; Monochrome Watches, Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin 16202ST (Frank Geelen, 26 January 2022), for the 16202 case; Fratello, Royal Oak 15500 versus 15202 (Robert-Jan Broer, 7 February 2019), for 15400 and 15500; Phillips, Royal Oak 15510ST lot (New York, 2026), for 15510. Fratello describes the 15400 as an update of the 15300 seven years before the 15500, which puts it at 2012.

The 16202 replaced the 15202, keeping the 39 mm by 8.1 mm case but swapping calibre 2121 for the new 7121, which runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour against 19,800 and adds a quick-set date (AP Chronicles, 2022). The 2121 had been used since the first Royal Oak, reference 5402 of 1972 (AP Chronicles, 2022). If a listing calls a watch a 16202 but the date will not quick-set, ask why.

The 15500 succeeded the 15400 in January 2019 with calibre 4302 (Fratello, 2019). Fratello notes that its bracelet, bolts and other parts are substantially larger than the 15202’s, and that it is about 2.3 mm thicker (Fratello, 2019). The 15510 followed in 2022 for the Royal Oak’s 50th anniversary; Phillips notes that it came with an oscillating weight engraved “50 Years”, produced only during the anniversary year (Phillips, 2026). The 15510ST is the steel 41 mm Royal Oak Selfwinding on Audemars Piguet’s own site (Audemars Piguet, checked 30 October 2026).

Two older references also turn up often. The 15300 is the 39 mm Selfwinding that came before the 15400, with calibre 3120 (Fratello, 2019). The 14790 is a 36 mm model made from 1992 to 2006, with calibre 2225 and 50-metre water resistance; WatchGuys notes that collectors report some earlier examples with calibre 2125 and later ones with 2325, and that only an archive extract confirms which a given watch left the factory with (WatchGuys, 2026).

How do you tell a 15300, 15400 and 15500 apart?

From the dial, mostly. In photos the three Selfwinding generations look alike, and a listing can easily carry the wrong reference. Fratello’s 2019 comparison gives the visible differences, and the Jumbo is easy to separate from all of them because it has no seconds hand (Fratello, 2019; Monochrome, 2022).

Reference Size What to look for on the dial Movement
15300 39 mm Relatively large AP logo at 12 o’clock 3120, 21,600 vph
15400 41 mm Double baton at 12 with a small AP logo below; larger “Audemars Piguet” lettering; “Swiss Made” moved above the minute track 3120, 21,600 vph
15500 41 mm No printed “Automatic”; date window moved towards the edge, with a minute track on the rehaut; fatter hands and markers; reshaped seconds counterweight 4302, 28,800 vph, quick-set date
15202 39 mm No seconds hand; Petite Tapisserie; AP logo at 6 o’clock on versions from 2012 2121, 19,800 vph
16202 39 mm No seconds hand; Petite Tapisserie in Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50 on steel; AP logo at 6 7121, 28,800 vph, quick-set date

Sources: Fratello, Royal Oak 15500 versus 15202 (7 February 2019), for the 15300, 15400 and 15500 dials and movements; AP Chronicles, The Royal Oak "Jumbo" models (2022), for the 15202 and 16202 dials and calibres; Monochrome Watches, 16202ST (2022), for the 16202's lack of a seconds hand and logo position. The **rehaut** is the inner ring between the dial and the crystal.

A seconds hand on a watch sold as a Jumbo, or a missing one on a 41 mm Selfwinding, means the listing is wrong. The 15400 and 15500 share a case size, so the dial text and the date position are the quickest way to tell them apart. AP Chronicles also records that the Jumbo’s case is a monocoque, with the eight hexagonal screws passing through the whole case and an oversized gasket around the movement (AP Chronicles, 2022), which is one reason the screws deserve a close look.

How do you read a full Royal Oak reference?

The short reference, such as 15510ST, is the start of a longer code. AP’s own site lists the steel Selfwinding as 15510ST.OO.1320ST.06 (Audemars Piguet, checked 30 October 2026). WatchesOff5th, a pre-owned dealer, explains the four parts: the first five digits are the model, the two letters after them the case material, the next two the bezel, the next six the bracelet or strap, and the last two the dial version (WatchesOff5th, Ryan Borashan, 5 November 2025).

Part 15510ST.OO.1320ST.06 What it tells you
Model 15510 Collection, complication and case size
Case material ST Stainless steel. Others include OR (pink gold), BA (yellow gold), BC (white gold), PT (platinum), TI (titanium) and CE (black ceramic)
Bezel OO Plain bezel; ZZ means a diamond-set bezel
Bracelet 1320ST Bracelet type and its metal; straps begin with a letter
Dial 06 Dial version for that model, numbered in sequence rather than by colour

Sources: Audemars Piguet, Royal Oak Selfwinding 15510ST; WatchesOff5th, How to read Audemars Piguet reference numbers (Ryan Borashan, 5 November 2025). Both checked 30 October 2026.

Ask for the full reference from the warranty card. If the card says ST and the bracelet has gold links, or says 1320ST and the watch is on a strap, something has been changed since sale. Because the dial number is sequential, you cannot read the colour from it; compare it with a listing on AP’s site or with the papers.

How do you check a Royal Oak bracelet for stretch?

Hold the watch up by the clasp and look for droop between the case and the clasp. Bracelet stretch is play that builds up as the link pins wear, so the bracelet sags and gaps open. WatchGuys, a pre-owned dealer, describes it on older Royal Oaks as correctable but not cheap (WatchGuys, 2026).

Look at the bracelet from the side as well. The bracelet narrows towards the clasp; AP’s heritage team describes the 15002’s as tapered (AP Chronicles, 2022). On a tapered bracelet the links are not all the same size, so a missing link is not a simple swap. Count the links and ask for any spares removed when the watch was sized.

Try the fit on your own wrist. SJX Watches notes that because the links are relatively large, a perfect fit is sometimes only possible with a “1.5” link, one and a half times a standard link, which has to be ordered separately (SJX Watches, 28 January 2019). Our guide to resizing a watch bracelet covers the basics.

Then check the clasp. Monochrome describes the 16202’s bracelet as closing with a double folding clasp, identical to the 15202’s (Monochrome, 2022). It should close firmly and sit flat.

Has the case been polished?

Look at the bevels. The 16202’s case is steel with brushed surfaces and polished accents, its octagonal bezel held by eight white gold screws, and its bracelet hand-finished with satin-brushing and polished chamfers (Monochrome, 2022). A chamfer, or bevel, is the narrow angled edge between two flat surfaces. On an original case those lines are crisp.

Polishing removes metal, and on a Royal Oak that shows first on the bevels. WatchGuys’ advice is to look at the case bevels and flanks in angled light, and it warns that an over-polished Royal Oak case does not recover its original geometry (WatchGuys, 2026). Look for rounded edges, bevels that have narrowed or vanished, and brushing that runs over a polished edge. SJX also notes that the high finish on case and bracelet means scuffs and scratches show up easily (SJX Watches, 2019), so light marks on an unpolished watch are normal.

Check the eight bezel screws too, and ask about any tool marks on them. Our guide on how to tell if a watch has been polished has the full set of signs, in photos and in hand.

Which papers should come with a Royal Oak?

Ask for the Audemars Piguet International Warranty Card, the box and any service papers. The card matters in practice: AP says that to claim under its warranty, you must take the watch to an AP Boutique, Authorised Dealer or Authorised Service Center together with the International Warranty Card received with the watch (Audemars Piguet International Sales Warranty, 2023).

AP warrants new watches against manufacturing defects for two years from the first purchase from an AP Boutique or Authorised Dealer. That can be extended to five years if the owner completes AP’s online form within one year of first purchase (AP, 2023). So a used Royal Oak might still be under warranty, but only if it was registered in time; ask the seller to show it. The cover excludes damage from accidents, unauthorised repairs or work by anyone outside AP’s network, non-genuine parts, and normal wear and ageing (AP, 2023).

Match the serial number on the card to the one on the watch, then run a stolen watch check on it. Our explainer on what a full set includes covers boxes and papers, and how warranties work covers transfer between owners.

What about Audemars Piguet servicing?

Audemars Piguet services watches through its Boutiques, Authorised Dealers and Authorised Service Centers; it says only those are entitled to provide warranty services (AP, 2023). Its services page lists periodical check-ups, maintenance services and strap and accessory support, and mentions a restoration workshop for older watches (Audemars Piguet, checked 30 October 2026).

Water resistance needs a specific check. AP’s warranty excludes water damage on a water-resistant watch that did not undergo the water-resistance tests AP requires each time the case is opened for any reason (AP, 2023). If a Royal Oak has been opened outside AP’s network, ask whether it was pressure-tested afterwards. The 16202 is rated to 50 metres (Monochrome, 2022).

We could not find a published AP service interval or UK price list. Ask an AP Boutique for a written quote for your reference, and ask whether the quoted service includes refinishing the case and bracelet, and whether you can ask for it to be left out. For how quotes work, see watch servicing costs.

Does Audemars Piguet sell certified pre-owned?

Yes, since October 2026, through an online platform called The Watch Keepers. SJX Watches reported that it launched first in Switzerland and other European markets, ahead of a planned global rollout, and that eligible watches must be at least two years past their original retail sale (SJX Watches, 26 October 2026).

Monochrome reported that watches are authenticated and their condition evaluated at AP’s own customer service facilities, and that buyers receive a certificate of authenticity and a two-year warranty (Monochrome Watches, October 2026). Neither report said whether UK buyers can use it yet. It is one route alongside dealers, auctions and private sales; compare their protections using our questions to ask before buying. The brand’s history is on our Audemars Piguet page.

What if a Royal Oak has no papers?

Then you need other evidence, and AP is one of the brands that can supply some of it. Fratello lists Audemars Piguet among the brands that issue extracts from their archives, documents based on the reference and serial numbers in the brand’s own ledgers that typically give the dates of manufacture and sale (Fratello, Balazs Ferenczi, 19 November 2018). Fratello is clear that an extract is not warranty paperwork and that, in general, extracts do not authenticate a watch, but notes that AP does offer an authentication service (Fratello, 2018).

So a watch without a card is not a dead end, but it changes the order of things. Agree that the sale depends on AP or a watchmaker confirming the watch, have the serial checked against stolen-watch registers before you pay, and get the seller’s description in writing. The extract also settles questions a card cannot, such as which calibre a 14790 was made with (WatchGuys, 2026). Ask an AP Boutique what it currently offers, and what it needs from you, before you agree a deal on the strength of it.

Buying a Royal Oak from outside the UK

The Watch Keepers opened first in Switzerland and other European markets (SJX Watches, 2026), and plenty of dealers sell from outside the UK. If you buy from abroad and have the watch sent to Great Britain, the import rules apply: for goods over £135 sent from abroad, you pay VAT to the delivery company before delivery or when you collect, and customs duty can apply on the price paid plus postage, packaging and insurance (GOV.UK, checked 30 October 2026). The rate of duty depends on the watch’s classification; check the UK Trade Tariff rather than relying on a seller’s estimate.

Settle three things before you pay a seller abroad. Who handles customs, and whether their price includes UK VAT. What happens to the import charges if you return the watch. And whether the seller’s warranty is honoured by them alone, or is AP’s own warranty, claimed through AP Boutiques, Authorised Dealers and Authorised Service Centers with the card (AP, 2023). Our guide to import duty and VAT on watches works through the calculation.

Worked example: does this Royal Oak listing add up?

This listing is illustrative, not real. Say a seller describes a watch as “Royal Oak Jumbo 16202ST, made 2023, ‘50 Years’ rotor, central seconds, full set, serviced by an independent watchmaker last year”.

Claim What the sources say What to ask
Jumbo 16202ST 39 mm, calibre 7121, no seconds hand (AP Chronicles, 2022; Monochrome, 2022) A central seconds hand does not belong on a 16202. Which reference is on the card?
Made 2023, “50 Years” rotor The “50 years” rotor appeared only on watches made in 2022 (Monochrome, 2022) A 2023 watch with that rotor needs explaining; check the card’s date
Full set AP’s warranty claims need the International Warranty Card (AP, 2023) Does the card’s serial match the watch, and is the date filled in?
Serviced by an independent AP’s warranty excludes work by anyone outside its network, and water damage where AP’s water-resistance test was skipped after opening (AP, 2023) Was it pressure-tested afterwards? Are the bezel screws aligned and unmarked?

Two of the four claims contradict the published facts for that reference. That does not prove the watch is fake: a seller may have mixed up the reference or the year. It does mean you should not pay until the card, the serial and the movement have been checked against each other, ideally by AP. The independent service is a separate issue. It may have been done well, but AP’s warranty excludes damage from work outside its network, and it makes WatchGuys’ screw check (all eight present, aligned and unmarked) more important (WatchGuys, 2026).

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the 15500ST and the 15510ST?

Both are 41 mm steel Royal Oak Selfwinding models with calibre 4302 (Fratello, 2019; Phillips, 2026). The 15500 came out in 2019; the 15510 followed in 2022 for the Royal Oak’s 50th anniversary, with an engraved “50 Years” weight on watches made in that year (Phillips, 2026).

What replaced the Royal Oak 15202?

The 16202, introduced in 2022 for the Royal Oak’s 50th anniversary. It keeps the 39 mm case but uses the new calibre 7121, with a 55-hour power reserve instead of 40 and a quick-set date (AP Chronicles, 2022).

What is a Royal Oak “Jumbo”?

The collectors’ name for the 39 mm extra-thin Royal Oak descended from the 1972 original, reference 5402. Its references include the 14802, 15002, 15202 and 16202 (AP Chronicles, 2022).

How do I check a Royal Oak bracelet for stretch?

Hold the watch by the clasp and look for droop between case and clasp, then look at the links from the side for gaps (WatchGuys, 2026). Stretch comes from wear in the link pins and can be corrected, at a cost.

How can I tell if a Royal Oak has been over-polished?

Look at the bevels in angled light. On an original case the polished chamfers are sharp and the brushed surfaces run cleanly up to them (Monochrome, 2022). Rounded or narrowed bevels suggest heavy polishing, which WatchGuys says cannot be undone (WatchGuys, 2026).

Does a used Royal Oak still have AP warranty?

Possibly. AP’s warranty runs for two years from first purchase, or five years if the owner registered the extension within a year of purchase (AP, 2023). Claims need the International Warranty Card, so ask for it and its dates.

Where do you service a Royal Oak in the UK?

AP says warranty work is done only by AP Boutiques, Authorised Dealers and Authorised Service Centers (AP, 2023). Ask one for a written quote. We found no published UK service price list.

Does a used Royal Oak need a water-resistance test?

Yes, if there is no record of a recent one. AP requires a water-resistance test each time the case is opened, and its warranty excludes water damage where that test was not done (AP, 2023). The 16202 is rated to 50 metres (Monochrome, 2022).

Does a Royal Oak Jumbo have a seconds hand?

No. The 39 mm extra-thin Jumbo, including the 15202 and 16202, shows hours and minutes only, which Monochrome notes makes it easy to identify (Monochrome, 2022). The 41 mm Selfwinding models have a central seconds hand.

What do the letters in a Royal Oak reference mean?

The two letters after the model number give the case material, such as ST for steel, OR for pink gold and BA for yellow gold; the full code also covers bezel, bracelet and dial (WatchesOff5th, 2025). AP’s own site lists the steel Selfwinding as 15510ST.OO.1320ST.06.

Is The Watch Keepers available in the UK?

The October 2026 launch reports said it opened first in Switzerland and other European markets, with a global rollout planned (SJX Watches, 2026). They did not name the UK, so check The Watch Keepers’ own site.
