Rolex Submariner alternatives: dive watches to compare

Six dive watches often weighed against the Rolex Submariner, set side by side on case size, water resistance and movement, from the makers and the watch press.

Submariner alternatives are dive watches that buyers compare with the Rolex Submariner on size, water resistance and movement. The ones covered here are the Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight and Pelagos, the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms and the Seiko Prospex SPB143. Each is described from its maker or from established watch press, with no ranking: which suits you depends on the size you wear, how deep you go and what you want inside the case.

A dive watch is a watch built to be worn underwater, usually with a rotating bezel for timing a dive and luminous markings that can be read in the dark. This guide compares specifications only; it does not compare prices.

Which dive watches are common Submariner alternatives?

Watches with the same basic layout: a steel or titanium case, a rotating timing bezel, a screw-down crown and water resistance of 200 metres or more. The Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight and Pelagos, Omega’s Seamaster Diver 300M, Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms and Seiko’s Prospex SPB143 all fit that description and are often compared with the Submariner.

They come from different histories. The Submariner was first shown at the Basel fair in 1954 (Wikipedia, Rolex Submariner). The Swatch Group dates the Fifty Fathoms to 1953 (Swatch Group), and it was first commissioned for French navy divers (Robb Report Singapore, 2019). Seiko describes the SPB143 as a modern re-interpretation of its first diver’s watch of 1965 (Seiko, 2020). Tudor, a sister company of Rolex, made its own Submariner from 1954 before launching the Black Bay and Pelagos in 2012 (Wikipedia, Tudor Watches).

How do the specs compare with the Submariner?

The current steel Submariners are 41 mm and water resistant to 300 m, with Rolex’s calibre 3230 or 3235 and about 70 hours of power reserve (SJX, 2020). The alternatives range from 38.2 mm to 45 mm and from 200 m to 500 m. The table uses one current or recent reference for each.

Bar and metres are two ways of stating the same test pressure: Omega lists the Diver 300M as “30 bar (300 metres / 1000 feet)” (Omega, 2026). Our guide to what water resistance ratings mean explains how the figures relate to swimming and diving.

How do the Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight and Pelagos compare?

They are two different answers from Rolex’s sister brand. The Black Bay Fifty-Eight is the smaller, thinner one: 39 mm and 11.9 mm thick, with the MT5402 movement, COSC-certified with a 70-hour power reserve (Worn & Wound, 2018), and water resistant to 200 m (Gear Patrol, 2018). The Pelagos is a 500 m titanium tool watch with a helium escape valve (SJX, 2015).

The 2015 Pelagos brought Tudor’s in-house calibre MT5612 into the model, a COSC-certified chronometer with about three days of power reserve. Its case is titanium apart from a screw-down steel caseback (SJX, 2015). Tudor launched the Pelagos in a 42 mm case in 2012 (Wikipedia, Tudor Watches).

The Black Bay Fifty-Eight reduced the case from the 41 mm of the standard Black Bay to 39 mm (Gear Patrol, 2018). Our Tudor brand guide explains how the Black Bay family has grown since.

What does the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M offer?

A 42 mm steel case, water resistant to 300 m, with a helium escape valve and Omega’s calibre 8800 with a 55-hour power reserve. The watch is a Master Chronometer, a certification approved by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology, METAS (Omega, 2026). It matches the Submariner’s 300 m rating with a slightly larger case.

A helium escape valve lets helium that has entered the case during saturation diving escape as the diver decompresses. Omega says the valve on the current Diver 300M has a conical design (Omega, 2026). The Seamaster family also includes the Planet Ocean and Aqua Terra, which are different watches; our Omega brand guide separates them.

What is the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms?

A dive watch the Swatch Group dates to 1953, now made in several sizes. The Fifty Fathoms Automatique ref. 5010 1130 71S is 42.3 mm in steel, water resistant to 30 bar, with calibre 1315 and a 120-hour power reserve (Blancpain, 2026). A 45 mm version, ref. 5015 1130 71S, uses the same calibre, and a 38.2 mm version uses calibre 1150 with 100 hours.

The name refers to fifty fathoms of depth, about 91 metres (Swisswatches Magazine, 2019). Blancpain also makes the Bathyscaphe within the Fifty Fathoms family. The Blancpain brand guide covers the history and the collections.

Where does the Seiko Prospex SPB143 fit?

At 40.5 mm it sits between the Black Bay Fifty-Eight and the Submariner in size, with a 200 m diver’s rating, Seiko’s 6R35 automatic calibre and about 70 hours of power reserve (Seiko, 2026). Seiko launched it in 2020 as a modern re-interpretation of its 1965 diver’s watch, rated “200m Diver’s” and 20 bar water resistant (Seiko, 2020).

Seiko’s own water resistance chart separates a “Diver’s Watch 200 meters” from ordinary water-resistant watches, and tells owners to check the marking on the caseback (Seiko UK, 2026). Seiko UK splits Prospex into Sea for divers, Land and Speedtimer (Seiko UK, 2026); see the Seiko brand guide.

What other dive watches are often compared with the Submariner?

Several more watches share the Submariner’s layout and come up in the same comparisons: Tudor’s 37 mm Black Bay 54, Oris’s Aquis Date Calibre 400, Omega’s deeper-rated Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M and Breitling’s Superocean Automatic 42. They widen the range in both directions, from a smaller case to twice the depth rating.

Checked 30 October 2026.

Tudor Black Bay 54. At 37 mm and 11.24 mm thick it is the smallest watch in this guide, and SJX describes its MT5400 as a compact COSC-certified movement first used in the Black Bay Fifty-Eight (SJX, 2023). It suits a buyer who finds 39 mm too large; it is 4 mm narrower than the Submariner.

Oris Aquis Date Calibre 400. The Calibre 400 has a 120-hour, five-day power reserve, matching the Fifty Fathoms in our first table. Oris gives a 10-year recommended service interval for it, and a standard two-year warranty that it extends to 10 years free of charge for owners who join MyOris (Oris, 2026). Ask a second-hand seller whether the first owner registered the watch.

Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M. Twice the Submariner’s rating at 600 m, with a helium escape valve and the Master Chronometer calibre 8900 (Omega, 2026). At 43.5 mm it is the largest steel watch here apart from the 45 mm Fifty Fathoms. Omega lists the reference in our table as no longer available, so check which reference has replaced it before comparing specifications.

Breitling Superocean Automatic 42. Rated to 300 m like the Submariner, in a 42 mm case with a ceramic unidirectional bezel (Watches of Switzerland, 2026). Its listed power reserve of about 38 hours is roughly half the Submariner’s, which matters if you rotate between watches; the next section shows why.

Which will still be running after a weekend off the wrist?

Any watch here with about 70 hours or more, if it was fully wound when you took it off. The example below is illustrative: a watch taken off at 6 pm on Friday and picked up at 8 am on Monday has been sitting for 62 hours. Power reserve figures are the makers’ or reviewers’ maximums from a full wind; a lightly worn automatic may start with less.

Watch Listed power reserve After 62 hours off the wrist Source
Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Automatique (calibre 1315) 120 hours Still running, about 58 hours left Blancpain, 2026
Oris Aquis Date Calibre 400 120 hours Still running, about 58 hours left Oris, 2026
Tudor Pelagos (MT5612) About three days Still running, about 10 hours left SJX, 2015
Rolex Submariner (3230 or 3235) About 70 hours Still running, about 8 hours left SJX, 2020
Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight and Black Bay 54 70 hours Still running, about 8 hours left Worn & Wound, 2018; SJX, 2023
Seiko Prospex SPB143 (6R35) About 70 hours Still running, about 8 hours left Seiko, 2026
Omega Planet Ocean 600M (8900) 60 hours Stopped about 2 hours earlier Omega, 2026
Omega Seamaster Diver 300M (8800) 55 hours Stopped about 7 hours earlier Omega, 2026
Breitling Superocean Automatic 42 (calibre 17) About 38 hours Stopped on Sunday morning Watches of Switzerland, 2026

A stopped watch is not a fault. It means resetting the time, and on a date model the date, before you wear it. If you wear one watch every day, the difference barely shows; if you change watches often, a longer reserve saves resetting.

Are these watches certified to ISO 6425?

None of the maker pages we read for these references states ISO 6425 certification. ISO 6425 is the international standard for divers’ watches: it applies to watches designed for diving to at least 100 m with a secured way to show diving time that is visible in the dark (ISO 6425:2018). A metre rating on its own does not show the standard was met.

The standard goes well beyond a depth figure. Fratello’s summary of ISO 6425 lists the main tests a compliant watch has to pass (Fratello, 2022):

ISO 6425 test What is required
Water resistance An overpressure 25% above the rated depth, then a low-pressure stage at 0.3 bar
Condensation A condensation test under ISO 22810, after which the watch works normally
Diving time indicator Protected against accidental turning, readable to one minute over at least 60 minutes
Legibility in the dark Markings readable at 25 cm after a 180-minute light exposure
Magnetism A 4,800 A/m direct current field, with the rate staying within ±30 seconds a day under ISO 764
Shock Two blows from a 3 kg hammer, and a one-metre drop onto hardwood
Strap or bracelet A closed bracelet withstands a 20 kg pull in both directions
Salt water A salt spray test for corrosion resistance

Source: Fratello, ISO 6425 divers' watch standard: what does it mean? (Gerard Nijenbrinks, 30 May 2022). Checked 30 October 2026. The standard itself is sold by ISO; this is a secondary summary.

If you plan to scuba dive, ask the maker or seller whether the specific watch was tested to ISO 6425, and keep the answer in writing. Seiko tells owners to check the water resistance marking on the back of the case (Seiko UK, 2026); compare it with the reference you are buying.

How long is each maker’s guarantee?

Five years for new watches from Rolex, Tudor and Omega, each from a different start date, and two years extendable to ten for Oris’s Calibre 400 watches. On a pre-owned watch, the date on the card decides how much is left. Our guide to how watch warranties work explains how a maker’s guarantee sits alongside a dealer’s.

What should you check on a pre-owned dive watch?

Check when the water resistance was last tested and by whom, because gaskets age. Check the bezel turns in one direction and clicks cleanly, the crown screws down fully, and the lume still glows. Then confirm the movement matches the reference, since several of these models changed calibre between generations.

Check Why it matters on a dive watch
Water resistance test Gaskets age; a pressure test shows whether the case still seals. Omega recommends a water resistance check every year (Omega FAQ, 2026)
Bezel action A loose or two-way bezel cannot time a dive reliably
Screw-down crown A crown that will not seat fully lets water in
Movement and generation The same model name can hide different calibres; check the reference
Papers and service history Shows age, origin and who opened the case

Several of these models changed movement within the same name, so the reference tells you which one you are looking at:

Frequently asked questions

What is the Tudor alternative to the Submariner?

Tudor makes two dive families often compared with it: the Black Bay, including the 39 mm Fifty-Eight rated to 200 m (Gear Patrol, 2018), and the Pelagos, a 42 mm titanium watch rated to 500 m (SJX, 2015; Wikipedia, Tudor Watches).

Is the Omega Seamaster Diver 300M the same depth rating as a Submariner?

Yes. Omega lists the Diver 300M at 300 m (Omega, 2026), and the current Submariner is rated to 300 m (SJX, 2020). The Omega case is 42 mm against the Submariner’s 41 mm.

How big is the current Rolex Submariner?

41 mm in steel, for both the no-date ref. 124060 and the Date ref. 126610LN, introduced in 2020 (SJX, 2020).

Which of these watches has the longest power reserve?

Of the references in our table, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Automatique with calibre 1315, at 120 hours (Blancpain, 2026). The Rolex, Tudor Fifty-Eight and Seiko are about 70 hours.

Which is the deepest-rated?

The Tudor Pelagos, at 500 m (SJX, 2015). The Submariner and Diver 300M are rated to 300 m, and the Black Bay Fifty-Eight and Seiko SPB143 to 200 m.

What does a helium escape valve do?

It lets helium that has entered the case during saturation diving escape during decompression. The Omega Diver 300M and the Tudor Pelagos both have one (Omega, 2026; SJX, 2015).

Is a 200 m dive watch enough for scuba diving?

It depends on the watch and the dive. ISO 6425 applies to divers’ watches rated to at least 100 m with further requirements (ISO 6425:2018). Ask the maker whether your watch was tested to it.

Are any of these watches chronometers?

The Tudor MT5402 and MT5612 are COSC-certified (Worn & Wound, 2018; SJX, 2015), and the Omega Diver 300M is a METAS Master Chronometer (Omega, 2026). Our guide to COSC chronometer certification explains the tests.

What is the smallest watch in this comparison?

The Tudor Black Bay 54, at 37 mm and 11.24 mm thick (SJX, 2023). The Black Bay Fifty-Eight is 39 mm and 11.9 mm thick (Worn & Wound, 2018).

What does ISO 6425 test besides depth?

According to Fratello’s summary, it also covers condensation, a protected diving time indicator, legibility in the dark at 25 cm, magnetism, shock, bracelet strength and salt spray (Fratello, 2022).

Which of these has the longest maker’s guarantee?

Oris extends the two-year warranty on its Calibre 400 watches to 10 years for owners who join MyOris (Oris, 2026). Rolex, Tudor and Omega each give five years on new watches.
